Former Clare hurler Niall Gilligan accused of hitting 12-year-old boy with a stick
Former All-Star hurler Niall Gilligan allegedly lost control and hit a 12-year-old boy multiple times with a stick at his hostel property. The prosecution claims the boy suffered injuries, while the defence argues Gilligan acted in self-defence. The case is ongoing in Ennis Circuit Court.

Former All-Star and Clare All-Ireland winning hurler, Niall Gilligan, was accused of hitting a 12-year-old child multiple times with a stick, as stated by counsel for the State, Sarah Jane Comerford BL.
Ms Comerford mentioned that Mr Gilligan lost control on October 5, 2023, when he punished the boy for causing damage to his property in Sixmilebridge.
Mr Gilligan denies the assault causing harm with a stick at the Jamaica Inn hostel on October 5, 2023.
In his closing speech, Mr Gilligan's counsel acknowledged the regrettable injuries but argued for reasonable force in self-defense.
The prosecution argued that Mr Gilligan lost his cool and took out his anger on the child, causing severe injuries.
The medical evidence and witness testimonies were presented to support both sides of the case.
Judge Francis Comerford will continue his charge to the jury before deliberations begin.
