Diogo Jota: Funeral Held for Liverpool Player and Brother

Diogo Jota’s family and former Liverpool teammates gathered in Gondomar, Portugal for the funeral of the late soccer star and his brother, André Silva. Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother died in a car crash in Spain, leading to an outpouring of grief in the soccer community.

Jota’s wife Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three young children, was seen embracing mourners at the church. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and left back Andy Robertson led tributes, along with other team members and officials.

Portugal star Rúben Neves was among the pallbearers, and figures from Portugal’s national soccer team also paid their respects. The bishop of Porto delivered an emotional homily at the funeral.

The funeral followed a wake held on Friday in Gondomar, with tributes pouring in from around the world. Moments of silence were observed in the Club World Cup, and British rock band Oasis dedicated a song to Jota during a concert in Cardiff.

In London, Portuguese tennis players at Wimbledon honored Jota by deviating from the dress code. The soccer world continues to mourn the loss of the talented brothers.
