Dalai Lama Expresses Hope to Serve for Decades More on 90th Birthday

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Saturday expressed his desire to live another 30 to 40 years to continue serving people. Addressing the ongoing speculation about his succession, he spoke at a long life prayer ceremony at Tsuglagkhang, the main Dalai Lama temple in McLeodganj, ahead of his 90th birthday. The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, mentioned receiving signs of blessings and hopes to live for several more decades.

Reflecting on his life in exile in India, the Dalai Lama emphasized his commitment to serving beings and benefiting them. He recently sparked a controversy over his succession, leading to a dispute between India and China. China insisted on having a say in the selection process, while India's minority affairs minister stated that the decision solely rests with the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

The Dalai Lama clarified that his successor would be chosen by the India-based Gaden Phodrang Trust, a non-profit organization he established, rejecting any external authority in the matter. This statement was perceived as a direct message to China.
