China to Sign Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons-Free Treaty, Malaysia Confirms

China has committed to signing a Southeast Asian treaty banning nuclear weapons in the region once all documentation is prepared, as stated by Malaysia's foreign minister on Thursday (Jul 10). The Southeast Asian Nuclear Weapons Free Zone (SEANWFZ) has been effective since 1997, restricting the use of nuclear power by members to peaceful purposes like power generation.

ASEAN aims for nuclear powers worldwide, including China, the United States, Britain, Russia, and France, to sign the treaty and pledge to refrain from using or moving nuclear weapons in the region, encompassing countries' exclusive economic zones and continental shelves.

Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan mentioned that China has committed to signing the treaty without reservation. China's foreign ministry stated that they are in discussions with ASEAN countries regarding the protocol's signing. Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted China's continuous support for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Southeast Asia and its willingness to lead in signing the treaty's protocol.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi is presently in Kuala Lumpur for meetings with his ASEAN counterparts.
