1.45 lakh cows and buffaloes in Virudhunagar district to receive Foot-and-Mouth disease vaccination

Vaccination of cows and buffaloes against Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) in Virudhunagar district will take place from July 2 to July 22 as part of the National Cattle Disease Control programme. The milk, meat, and hair from these animals play a crucial role in the economy, making it essential to protect them from FMD.

1.45 lakh cows and buffaloes will be vaccinated to prevent the disease, which can reduce productivity, hinder pregnancy, and even cause death among young calves. The economic impact of FMD is significant, despite low mortality rates.

The disease spreads during winter, mainly through unvaccinated or improperly raised animals. It can be transmitted through fodder, water, and contact with infected animals or humans. Symptoms include fever, reduced milk production, and blisters in the mouth and hoofs.

The vaccination drive will involve 51 teams at 82 animal husbandry pharmacies and six veterinary hospitals, benefiting all calves above four months of age.
