DAVAO CITY – Vice President Sara Duterte emphasized the importance of maintaining an independent foreign policy for the Philippines and avoiding entanglement in the US-China rivalry in the South China Sea.

During a Zoom session with Russia Today, Vice President Duterte highlighted the need for the country to steer clear of aligning too closely with either global power, citing the Constitution's call for an independent foreign policy.

Expressing concern over the perceived pro-US stance in managing maritime disputes with China, Vice President Duterte called for clarity on the country's foreign policy stance. She stressed that as a middle power, the Philippines should refrain from being drawn into power struggles between major nations.

She emphasized the importance of treating relationships with the US and China separately and avoiding reliance on one to resolve issues with the other.

Vice President Duterte's comments coincide with heightened maritime tensions and increased joint military activities with the US, which have faced criticism from Beijing.
