US Senate Votes on Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill'
The US Senate has started voting on President Trump's 'big beautiful bill' after the House of Representatives passed it last month. The bill includes tax breaks and spending cuts, sparking debate among Republicans and Democrats.

The US Senate has started voting on a significant spending plan, known as the 'big beautiful bill', after weeks of negotiations. The bill, which President Donald Trump wants passed by 4 July, has faced division among Republicans over welfare program cuts and tax breaks extension. The Senate version of the bill will return to the House for another vote after changes were made.
On Sunday, the Senate voted 51-49 to open debate on the budget bill. Some Republicans and all Democrats opposed the move, seeking further changes. The bill faces up to 20 hours of debate, with Democrats expected to use their full allotted time.
If the bill reaches a full Senate vote, Republicans can only afford three defections for it to pass. If necessary, Vice President JD Vance may cast a tie-breaking vote. The bill will then go back to the House for a potential vote as early as Wednesday.
Republicans and Democrats have differing views on spending cuts and tax breaks extension in the bill. The Senate version includes tax cuts promised by Trump, but also authorizes significant new borrowing, adding to the growing US debt load.
The bill's estimated $3.3tn increase in debt has raised concerns, with the national debt currently at $36 trillion. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned of potential payment issues if the debt limit is not addressed by mid-July.
