Over 260K Pools Recalled in Canada Following Tragic Incidents in the U.S.

More than 260,000 above-ground swimming pools are being recalled in Canada from brands Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup after reports that nine children drowned in the pools in the U.S. The recall involves pools that are 48 inches (122 centimetres) or taller with compression straps along the outside and over vertical support legs. Health Canada warns that the compression strap may create a foothold, posing a drowning risk for children. No incidents in Canada have been reported as of July 17, but the U.S. has seen three incidents and nine drownings. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that children aged 22 months to 3 years drowned after accessing the pools through the footholds. The deaths occurred between 2007 and 2022 in six states. Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup models sold between 2003 and 2025 are affected. Approximately 266,000 units were sold in Canada and five million in the U.S. Pool brand names and model numbers are on the pool liner. Owners should contact the companies for a repair kit and ensure children cannot access the pool unsupervised.
