A total of 603 tons of garbage were collected in 71 pumping stations and during the clean-up drive in various flooded areas in Metro Manila, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

MMDA chief information officer Sharon Gentalian reported that 526.8 tons of trash were collected from the pumping stations from July 18 to 22, while around 26.37 truckloads of garbage were collected in flooded parts of Metro Manila from July 21 to 22.

Gentalian mentioned that the 26.37 truckloads of garbage equate to approximately 80 tons of trash collected from all flooded areas in the metropolis.

Garbage collection involved manual removal by MMDA personnel to clear drainage systems, waterways, and floodwater pumping stations in Metro Manila.

MMDA chairman Don Artes highlighted that garbage blocking drainage systems and waterways has historically caused flooding in 49 identified areas in the metropolis.

Artes emphasized the need for proper garbage disposal to prevent flooding, pointing out that the drainage system, over 50 years old, cannot handle large items like sofas and refrigerators.

Despite regular cleaning efforts, undisciplined disposal of trash on streets, rivers, and waterways persists, contributing to the almost 80 tons of garbage collected on July 21 and 22.

Artes stressed the importance of public participation in maintaining discipline in garbage disposal to address flooding issues in Metro Manila.

During an inspection in Pasay City, MMDA personnel retrieved heavy loads of garbage, including furniture, refrigerators, wheels, fallen tree trunks, and other large items, from the Tripa De Gallina Pumping Station on July 22.

Artes warned about the impact of plastics clogging the pumps, leading to overheating and equipment damage, underscoring the need for responsible garbage disposal practices.

Artes urged the public to cooperate in ensuring proper garbage disposal as a crucial step in preventing flooding in the long term.
