Oldest Marathon Runner, Fauja Singh, Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident

A 114-year-old man, Fauja Singh, who set a record as the oldest man to run a full marathon in 2011 in Toronto, has passed away. Singh, known as the 'Turbaned Torpedo,' died in a hit-and-run accident in his native village near Jalandhar in Punjab, India. He sustained severe head injuries and later died in the hospital.

His death was confirmed by his London-based running club, Sikhs In The City, and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him for inspiring the youth on fitness. Singh's marathon achievement in 2011 was not officially recognized by Guinness World Records due to lack of a birth certificate to prove his age.

Alan Brookes, the race director with TCS, remembered Singh as a remarkable individual who transformed the event into a global phenomenon. Singh started running at the age of 89 to cope with depression after the tragic deaths of his wife and son in India.

He ran his last competitive race in 2013 at the age of 101, finishing the Hong Kong Marathon's 10-kilometer race. Singh hoped to be remembered and continued to be invited to events even after retiring from racing.
