New DFA Secretary Lazaro Attends First ASEAN Meeting in Kuala Lumpur
Recently appointed Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to participate in the 58th ASEAN Ministerial Meetings and Related Meetings. During the event, she engaged in discussions with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and focused on preparations for the Philippines' upcoming 2026 ASEAN chairship.
Newly installed Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to participate in the 58th ASEAN Ministerial Meetings and Related Meetings. Lazaro will lead the Philippine delegation during the ASEAN meeting from July 8 to 11 and is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with counterparts.
During the meetings, Lazaro met with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn to discuss the Philippines' preparations for its 2026 ASEAN chairship. She emphasized the importance of a people-oriented, people-centered, and rules-based ASEAN.
Lazaro also had productive discussions with Foreign Minister Hasan regarding maritime cooperation and with Laos Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane to deepen PH-Laos relations. The Philippines and Laos are commemorating the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties this year.
Prior to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) gathered in Kuala Lumpur to focus on chairmanship priorities under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability.'
