German space capsule carrying ashes of 166 people lost during return to Earth
A German startup, The Exploration Company (TEC), is investigating the loss of the Nyx space capsule that was supposed to return ashes to bereaved families after completing an extraterrestrial trip. The capsule was lost during its planned re-entry, causing disappointment among families and the company's clients.

A German startup is investigating the loss of a space capsule carrying the ashes of 166 people back to their families. The Nyx craft was supposed to return the ashes to Earth after orbiting the planet twice in late June. However, an anomaly occurred during its planned re-entry.
The Exploration Company (TEC), based in Bavaria, stated that they re-established communication with the capsule upon reentry but lost it again at 26 km altitude. An independent investigation team has been set up to understand the outcomes.
TEC apologized to their clients for the incident. Charles Chafer, CEO of Celestis, the company that hired TEC, mentioned that this reentry attempt was unprecedented. The flight also carried cannabis plant material and seeds for a Mars study.
In 2024, Celestis sent the remains of 'Star Trek' series figures into space. The fate of the lost Nyx capsule remains uncertain.
