Understanding the $75 Charge on Your Rogers/Fido Bill

If your July cell phone bill was more expensive, you’re not alone. Rogers and Fido added a $75 fee for 3G users last month, and the first bills with the new fee have been sent out.

Customers expressed frustration on social media about the fee, which Rogers announced last month. The company stated it would charge a one-time $75 fee to customers using 3G networks for a full billing cycle. Notices were sent to customers who might be charged, with the fee appearing on bills for customers exclusively using 3G on June 30, 2025.

Rogers warned that customers continuing to use 3G after June 30 won’t be able to text or receive calls.

The fee, in addition to a $3 monthly fee, is intended to cover the cost of transitioning to 3G. Rogers plans to shut down its 3G network on July 31, 2025, and encourages customers to upgrade their devices.

The main issue with devices is VoLTE support, as phones without VoLTE will rely on 3G networks for services like voice calls. Customers with incompatible devices will need to upgrade to avoid fees and service issues. Rogers provides a device compatibility tool for checking compatibility.

Rogers offers $0 upgrade options to affected customers. Depending on offers and personal needs, switching providers or buying a new phone outright may be more beneficial.

However, switching solely to avoid the 3G shutdown may not be the best solution. Bell and Telus are also phasing out their 3G networks and implementing similar fees. Taking a non-VoLTE phone to these providers may only delay the network shutdown by a few months.
