Masai Ujiri Steps Down as Vice-Chairman and President of Toronto Raptors

Masai Ujiri is no longer the vice-chairman and president of the Toronto Raptors, according to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

MLSE announced that they have 'parted ways' with Ujiri, who was in the final year of his contract. ESPN was the first to report Ujiri's departure, citing sources.

Keith Pelley, president and CEO of MLSE, praised Ujiri as an 'inspirational leader' who brought an NBA Championship to Toronto and transformed the organization both on and off the court.

Ujiri led the Raptors to their only NBA title in 2019 through bold moves like trading DeMar DeRozan for Kawhi Leonard and promoting Nick Nurse to head coach.

Under Ujiri's leadership, the Raptors made the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons but struggled after their championship win, missing the playoffs this year with a 30-52 record.

Reports of tension between Ujiri and Edward Rogers, the executive chair of Rogers Communications, had surfaced last year. Ujiri, a Nigerian national, is also known for his work with Giants of Africa, an organization supporting youth through sports.

A search for Ujiri's replacement will start soon, while the current Raptors front office leadership, including general manager Bobby Webster, remains in place.
