The Land Transportation Office (LTO) in the Philippines has suspended the licenses of 10 taxi and Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers for overcharging and contracting passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) in Pasay City. The drivers were caught during a surprise operation at Naia on June 25.
The LTO issued show cause notices to the drivers, informing them of the 90-day suspension of their licenses. LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza stated that the suspension means the drivers cannot work during that period due to taking advantage of commuters.
The drivers apprehended are facing charges for improper operation of a motor vehicle, with a maximum penalty of license revocation. LTO enforcers were deployed in three Naia terminals following incidents of overcharging, including a taxi driver charging P1,300 for a short trip and another charging over P5,000 for a separate trip.
Additionally, a motorcycle taxi ride is under investigation for charging a passenger P2,000 from NAIA to Cainta, Rizal. Mendoza highlighted that such cases can negatively impact the country's image to foreign tourists.
'We will not tolerate this abuse. If it can happen to our citizens, it can be worse for our foreign visitors, damaging our country's reputation,' Mendoza emphasized.
