Heavy monsoon rain causes fatalities in Pakistan and US, glacial lake outburst in Nepal

The south-west monsoon in Pakistan turned deadly this week, with heavy rain causing at least 63 deaths. The rain originated in north-west India and developed into a more organized area of low pressure, leading to significant flooding in the province of Punjab. Cities like Lahore and Islamabad were hit, with Chakwal receiving double the average July rainfall.

Rivers overflowed, causing floods in low-lying areas. Most deaths were due to building collapses and some from electrocution. This year's monsoon has claimed nearly 180 lives, over half of which are children. Pakistan's low-lying regions make it highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters.

In the US, New York and New Jersey faced flash flooding, resulting in road closures and fatalities. New Jersey declared a state of emergency, while New York City saw record rainfall, leading to subway inundation.

In Nepal, a glacial lake outburst caused flooding in the Rasuwa district, killing seven people and damaging infrastructure. The incident highlights the growing risk of flash floods due to unstable glacial lakes in the Himalayas.
