Drag artist James Lee Williams, known as The Vivienne, was discovered deceased in their home after friends were unable to reach them. Drag artist James Lee Williams, known as The Vivienne, was found dead in the bath by a neighbour after friends couldn't reach out, an inquest revealed. Williams, the first winner of Ru Paul's Drag Race UK in 2019, likely died at home in Chorlton-by-Backford, near Chester, two days before being found on 5 January. The 32-year-old had struggled with ketamine addiction and relapsed after years of sobriety. The conclusion was death by misadventure due to a drug-induced cardiac arrest.
Williams, using they/them and he/him pronouns, had shared addiction struggles on Ru Paul's Drag Race, surprising their family. Their father described Williams as outgoing and full of life, wanting to bring laughter and help to others. Friends remembered Williams for their kindness and talent beyond drug use.
Williams had just finished a musical tour and had time off before returning to work. They were found by a neighbour after not responding to calls. The police found evidence of drug use but no signs of forced entry or disturbance. The inquest ruled out suicide intentions.
Williams, originally from Colwyn Bay, North Wales, rose to fame after winning Drag Race UK and appearing in various TV shows and performances.
