Grandparents Found Guilty of Murdering Two-Year-Old Grandson Ethan Ives-Griffiths

A grandfather and grandmother have been found guilty of murdering their two-year-old grandson, Ethan Ives-Griffiths, who died on 16 August 2021 after suffering a 'catastrophic' head injury at their home in Garden City, Flintshire. Michael Ives, 47, and Kerry Ives, 46, were convicted of murder, while Ethan's mother, Shannon Ives, 28, was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child and cruelty to a child.

The trio will be sentenced on 3 October. Ethan was dangerously dehydrated, severely underweight, and had 40 visible bruises or marks when he collapsed with a head injury. The court heard he was 'targeted for abuse and subjected to casual cruelty.' The judge mentioned life imprisonment for the grandparents and a substantial prison sentence for Shannon Ives.

Ethan's father expressed gratitude for the support and remembered his son as a loving child. Detective Superintendent Chris Bell condemned the trio's actions, stating that Ethan should have been shown love and protection. A review of the case is ongoing to identify lessons to be learned.

During the trial, a 999 call revealed the events leading to Ethan's collapse. CCTV footage showed Ethan struggling while other children played around him. Shannon Ives was present at her parents' home when the tragic incident occurred.
