Driver jailed for causing fatal crash that killed Smethwick toddler

Shahzad was back behind the wheel of a stolen car in December, using false number plates. Det Sgt Paul Hughes from West Midlands Police stated that Shahzad did not care about the family in the Toyota after causing a head-on crash on Dartmouth Road. He fled the scene immediately after the crash, driving on the wrong side of the road at 48mph in a 30mph zone.

The family, still grieving the loss of their toddler, was trying to care for Shehbaz's mother. Shahzad was sentenced to 15 years and four months in jail. His Honour Judge Gosling described the impact of the fatal collision as 'catastrophic,' emphasizing the devastation caused to the victims' family and friends.

Shahzad's disregard for the consequences of his actions was highlighted by his decision to flee the scene. He had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and failing to stop after a crash.
