DOH-5 Steps Up Efforts to Reduce Smoking and Promote Healthy Living in Bicol Region
The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) is intensifying its campaign to decrease tobacco and vape use in the region and encourage healthier lifestyles during National No Smoking Month. Through various initiatives, including training programs and collaboration with local government units, DOH-5 aims to create a smoke-free environment and provide support for smoking cessation.

The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) is intensifying efforts to reduce tobacco and vape consumption in the region and promote healthier lifestyles as part of National No Smoking Month.
DOH-5 is conducting ongoing integrated training on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) to equip healthcare workers with skills to promote healthy living and manage NCDs at the community level.
Through the National Tobacco Control and Prevention Program, DOH-5 aims to decrease tobacco use prevalence by 30 percent by collaborating with inter-agency smoke-free committees and implementing regulatory policies on tobacco and vape products.
DOH-5 is working with local government units to implement “Comprehensive Smoke and Vape Free Ordinances” in public spaces like schools, healthcare facilities, and workplaces.
Health facilities offer smoking cessation services for those looking to quit, and individuals can seek early detection, counseling, and risk assessments at health facilities or contact the DOH Quitline at 1558 for support.
DOH-Bicol stresses the importance of quitting tobacco use to prevent diseases and improve health outcomes, along with maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest.
In 2024, the Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS) reported 197,030 Bicolanos aged 20 to 59 as tobacco users and 29,864 individuals aged 60 and above as current smokers. (PNA)
