Sindh government suspends SBCA DG after Karachi building collapse
The Sindh government has suspended SBCA Director General Ishaque Khuhro following the collapse of a five-storey building in Karachi's Lea Market that resulted in 27 deaths. The building had been declared unsafe, with prior evacuation notices issued since 2023. A new DG has been appointed, and compensation announced for the victims' families.

The Sindh government suspended Sindh Building and Control Authority (SBCA) Director General Ishaque Khuhro over the recent building collapse in Karachi that claimed 27 lives. The building on Fida Husain Shaikha Road in Lea Market had been declared uninhabitable due to its dilapidated structure. Multiple notices were issued to vacate the building since 2023.
Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah suspended Khuhro for misconduct and inefficiency. Shahmir Khan Bhutto was appointed as the new SBCA DG. The government announced Rs1 million compensation for the families of the deceased.
Opposition parties condemned the Sindh government and demanded compensation, alternative residences, and manslaughter cases against responsible officials. A fact-finding committee was formed to investigate the incident.
51 buildings in Karachi are deemed 'extremely fragile' and should be demolished. The SBCA identified 588 dangerous buildings in Karachi, with 107 in Lyari. Officers involved since 2022 will be investigated, and legal action will be taken if negligence is found.
