Viswanathan Anand rates Gukesh's performance at Norway Chess

Gukesh Dommaraju made history last December by becoming the youngest world chess champion after defeating Ding Liren. In his first tournament as the reigning champion, he almost won the Tata Steel chess event but lost to Praggnanandhaa in a tie-break. However, he faced challenges in Freestyle Chess events, with mixed results in various tournaments.

At the recent Norway Chess, Gukesh bounced back strongly, achieving his first classical victory over Magnus Carlsen and his compatriot Arjun Erigaisi. Despite finishing third in the standings, he impressed his mentor, Viswanathan Anand, who upgraded his performance grade from a C to a B.

Reflecting on Gukesh's progress, Anand acknowledged the need for improvement and highlighted the teenager's potential for growth. While critiquing some of Gukesh's decisions in Norway Chess, Anand also praised his resourcefulness and defensive skills.
