Videos Show Tesla 'Robotaxis' Braking Suddenly and Driving on Wrong Side of Road

Regulators are investigating issues with Elon Musk's self-driving 'robotaxis' after videos showed some braking suddenly and driving on the wrong side of the road. The tests started in Austin, Texas, marking the first time Tesla cars without a human driver have carried paying passengers. Musk envisions thousands of these cars operating in the US, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into the reported errors. One video shows a Tesla in a left turn-only lane going straight through an intersection, with the steering wheel shaking erratically, before briefly veering into the wrong lane. Another clip shows a robotaxi braking hard in the middle of the road, apparently reacting to flashing police lights. Tesla has not yet responded to the videos. Ten robotaxis are part of the Austin test, with some social media videos showing them operating as intended. Tesla shares initially rose 8% but dropped back nearly 3% after the programme launch. The cars are initially monitored by a human 'safety monitor' in the front seat, but it's unclear if they've had to intervene in any incidents.
