Turkey reported that a dozen soldiers died of methane gas poisoning while searching a cave in northern Iraq for a soldier killed by Kurdish fighters. The Defence Ministry initially reported eight deaths but later raised it to 12. Methane is a dangerous gas that can cause asphyxiation. The incident occurred during an operation against the PKK in April 2022. Recovery teams have been searching the area for three years.
The cave, previously used as a hospital by the PKK, is located at an altitude of 852 meters. Turkey and the PKK have been in conflict for 40 years, resulting in many casualties. Turkey is currently in talks with the PKK to end the conflict after the group agreed to stop armed struggle.
