Trump imposes 30% tariffs on EU imports
US President Donald Trump has announced a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union, effective from August 1. This decision comes after failed trade negotiations with key allies. The EU expressed concerns over disruptions to supply chains and vowed to protect its interests.

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting on 1 August after failed trade deal negotiations. The EU tariff is higher than the previous 20% levy announced in April.
Mr Trump cited trade imbalance as the reason for the tariff rate. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed concerns about disrupting transatlantic supply chains and emphasized the EU's commitment to fair trade practices.
The EU officials view the announcement as a negotiating tactic. Mr Trump also announced tariffs on other countries and a 50% tariff on copper. The EU had hoped for a comprehensive trade agreement with the US.
Mr Trump's tariff orders have generated significant revenue for the US government. The EU is under pressure to negotiate a deal that safeguards its industry while not compromising on its terms.
In a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, Mr Trump outlined the 30% tariff on EU products starting August 1, 2025, urging EU companies to manufacture in the US to avoid tariffs.
