Donald Trump to Impose 30% Tariff on EU Imports

Donald Trump has announced a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union starting from 1 August. This move could increase prices of various products in the US, including French cheese, Italian leather goods, German electronics, and Spanish pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Trump has also imposed a 30% tariff on goods from Mexico, citing national security concerns related to the US trade deficit. In separate letters posted on his Truth Social account, he expressed dissatisfaction with the trade relationship with the EU and accused Mexico of not doing enough to combat drug trafficking.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned of potential countermeasures if the US proceeds with the tariff. She emphasized the EU's commitment to fair trading practices and readiness to protect EU interests.

Reacting to the announcement, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed concern and emphasized the importance of unity within the EU in negotiations with the US. Mexico is working to find alternatives to the tariffs before they come into effect.

Trump's previous tariff actions and negotiations with various countries have led to a series of tariff threats and delays. While the US imposed a 20% tariff on EU imports in April, negotiations have been ongoing to reach a trade deal.
