Over 20 motorists caught providing illegal ride-hailing services at Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay

More than 20 motorists were caught offering illegal ride-hailing services at Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay on July 11. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) stated that these motorists were providing rides within Singapore and to and from Malaysia. Acting on tip-offs, LTA impounded the vehicles used for these illegal rides as the drivers did not possess a valid Public Service Vehicle Licence, necessary for offering point-to-point transport services, including cross-border trips.

LTA emphasized the risks associated with illegal transport services, such as lack of proper insurance and safety hazards for passengers. These services also impact the livelihoods of licensed drivers. Offenders face fines up to $3,000, imprisonment for six months, or both, with the possibility of vehicle forfeiture. Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling highlighted that LTA will intensify enforcement actions against illegal private-hire car services, including imposing heavier fines and seizing vehicles of violators.
