Son of victim in 1994 Chinook crash demands transparency as documents sealed for 100 years

The son of a victim of the 1994 Chinook helicopter crash is calling for 'truth and transparency' after the Ministry of Defence rejected calls for a judge-led public inquiry. Families of the 29 individuals who perished in the tragedy are determined to pursue a judicial review over the MoD's decision. The RAF Chinook ZD576 crashed on the Mull of Kintyre, resulting in the loss of all onboard, including 25 British intelligence personnel and four crew members. Initially, the pilots were found to be grossly negligent, but this ruling was overturned 17 years later after pressure from the families. The families have taken legal action and are now seeking a judicial review after their request for a public inquiry was turned down by the MoD.

Andy Tobias, whose father died in the crash, expressed anger over the sealing of documents for 100 years, creating suspicion and raising questions about the incident. He emphasized the need for transparency and truth regarding the circumstances of the crash. The families, under the Chinook Justice Campaign, argue that the failure to order a public inquiry violates human rights obligations.

Nicola Rawcliffe, whose brother was among the victims, criticized the MoD's decision, stating that the aircraft was not airworthy despite previous inquiries claiming otherwise. The MoD defended its stance, citing previous investigations and the protection of individuals' data rights in the sealed documents.
