SCDF rescues 2 workers stranded on gondola outside Raffles City Tower

A gondola was seen supported by a cable only on one side and hanging from the exterior of the building. Two workers were rescued after the gondola they were on tipped over and was suspended almost vertically outside Raffles City Tower on July 21. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the height rescue incident between the 28th and 29th floor of the building at about 11.20am. Firefighters checked the gondola's stability and the workers' condition. Rescuers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Dart) secured the gondola with safety lines and brought the workers into the building through the windows on levels 29 and 30. Both workers were taken to Raffles Hospital in stable condition. The incident occurred during routine facade resealant works when there was a sudden change in weather. A stop-work order was issued, and the gondola tilted while being retracted. The gondola was left hanging from the building's exterior.

Raffles City Tower is a 42-storey office tower that is part of Raffles City. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing the gondola hanging with a man screaming for help. Security guards cordoned off the building's entrance. Stop-work orders and fines have been issued to firms for flouting rules protecting workers at high places. Workplace safety statistics show a decrease in workplace deaths over the past decade.
