Pakistan signed the UN agreement for conserving marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction. In 2015, Pakistan's seabed territory expanded by 50,000 square kilometers. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar signed the BBNJ Agreement at the UN Headquarters. The BBNJ pact is the third implementing agreement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Pakistan's signing reflects its commitment to marine biodiversity conservation. The agreement addresses marine genetic resources, area-based management, environmental impact assessments, and technology transfer.
Churna Island was designated as Pakistan's second marine protected area. Astola Island in Balochistan boasts diverse wildlife and marine habitat.
