New PNG NRL Team Promises 'Permanent Holiday' for Players, Says Peter V'landys

Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter V’landys has stated that players and their partners will enjoy a 'permanent holiday' when the Papua New Guinea expansion team joins the NRL in 2028. The team aims to provide resort-style accommodation to attract top talent for its debut season.

V’landys has assured PNG Prime Minister James Marape that the team will reach the top eight in its first year. He emphasized the deadline of 2028 will be met, with plans for luxurious accommodation and facilities for the players and their partners.

The new club's board includes former Canterbury chairman Ray Dibb, former Kumul Marcus Bai, Wapu Sonk, Lorna McPherson, Richard Pegum, Stan Joyce, and Ian Tarutia. V’landys expressed confidence in the board's ability to deliver competitive performance from the outset.

The franchise is receiving funding from the Australian government and the PNG government, with provisions for termination based on security agreements between the two countries. The new team is set to sign players for the 2028 season, targeting high-profile talents like Xavier Coates.
