Microsoft Offers Free Windows 10 Security Updates Until 2026 with a Twist
Microsoft will provide free Windows 10 security updates until 2026 for select users, expanding options beyond the paid Extended Security Update program. Users can opt in through Windows Backup or redeem Microsoft Rewards points. While not extending the official end-of-support date, this move offers an extra year of updates for those sticking with Windows 10.

Microsoft has announced that it will offer free Windows 10 security updates until 2026 for certain users. This move expands options for users beyond the paid Extended Security Update (ESU) program. Users can receive an additional year of free updates by opting into Windows Backup or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. While these offers do not formally extend Windows 10's end-of-support date, they effectively provide an extra year of updates for users who prefer not to migrate to Windows 11. Windows 10 remains installed on a majority of the world’s Windows PCs. Microsoft will begin offering access to Extended Security Updates through system notifications and the Settings app, with full rollout expected by mid-August. Consumers can receive free updates until October 13, 2026, while businesses and schools will need to pay for coverage. Microsoft continues to push Windows 11 upgrades and new PC purchases, maintaining the 2025 end-of-support date for Windows 10.
