Man in his 40s arrested for fatal hit-and-run in Dublin

A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Dublin on Monday.

The incident happened shortly after 9pm on Railway Street in Balbriggan, when a pedestrian, a man in his 20s, was struck by a car. The vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene.

The man received emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

On Tuesday evening, gardaí confirmed that a man in his 40s had been arrested in connection with the incident. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in North Dublin.

An autopsy on the pedestrian was carried out Tuesday by the Office of the State Pathologist at Dublin City Mortuary.

While a preliminary report has been furnished to the garda investigation team, specific details are not being released for operational reasons.

Garda Technical Bureau and Garda Forensic Collision Investigators completed an examination of the scene on Railway Street earlier on Tuesday.

An incident room has been established at Balbriggan Garda Station and a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed. A Garda Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to provide support to the deceased’s family.

Investigating gardaí have issued for witnesses.

They say they are particularly interested in the movements of a black saloon car, observed in the Raliway Street area at the time, which was later abandoned following a collision with a second saloon car on Drogheda Street in Balbriggan, after the hit-and-run incident.

Gardaí have urged any road users or pedestrians with camera footage from the Railway Street and Drogheda Street areas of Balbriggan between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Monday to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Balbriggan Garda Station on 01 666 4500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána also said the force is aware that images and video footage related to this incident are circulating on social media and messaging platforms.

\"We are appealing to anyone who receives this content to refrain from sharing or reposting it further,\" the spokesperson said.
