Man Faces Charges for Road Accident Near City Gate Mall Injuring Pedestrians

A motorist named Darryl Angus Tan Lingyi faced two charges in a district court on June 25 for his alleged involvement in a traffic accident near a Beach Road mall that left three pedestrians injured.

One charge against Tan stated that he was driving a car without due care and attention at the junction of Jalan Sultan and Minto Road on Dec 21, 2023, causing grievous hurt to a 58-year-old female pedestrian.

Tan, 38, is also accused of causing an accident involving two male pedestrians, aged 32 and 42, by allegedly failing to keep a proper lookout while making a discretionary right turn into Minto Road, resulting in a collision with a taxi.

The taxi then hit the three pedestrians after veering to the left and mounting a pavement outside the City Gate shopping mall. Details of the pedestrians' injuries were not disclosed in court documents.

In 2023, a ComfortDelGro spokesperson mentioned that the taxi driver sustained minor injuries, and there were no passengers onboard during the accident.

Tan's case is scheduled for mention in court on July 23. If found guilty of causing grievous hurt by driving without due care and attention, an offender can face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

A first-time offender convicted of causing hurt by driving in a similar manner can be jailed for up to a year, fined up to $2,500, or both.
