FBI and cybersecurity experts warn of hacking group targeting airlines and transportation sector

The FBI and cybersecurity firms are warning that the hacking group Scattered Spider is now targeting airlines and the transportation sector. The FBI observed cyberattacks resembling Scattered Spider in the airline sector. Executives from Google’s Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 also witnessed Scattered Spider cyberattacks in the aviation industry. Scattered Spider is a group of English-speaking hackers, mostly teenagers and young adults, motivated by financial gain to steal and extort data. They use social engineering, phishing, and threats of violence to access networks and deploy ransomware. The FBI warned that large corporations and their IT providers, including vendors and contractors in the airline ecosystem, could be at risk. Hawaiian Airlines and WestJet have reported cyber intrusions this month, with the WestJet incident linked to Scattered Spider. This follows recent attacks on the U.K. retail sector and the insurance industry by Scattered Spider.
