The earthquake occurred in Iran's Semnan province. Iran experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake amidst escalating tensions with the US and Israel, following a previous quake near the country's nuclear sites. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the quake with a depth of 10 kilometers near Shahrud, Semnan Province at 8.38pm local time. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) listed the earthquake as 4.5 magnitude, while the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake reported it as 4.6.

Experts suggest that the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area but is not expected to have caused significant damage. Shahrud, with a population of around 131,900, is located 26 kilometers from the epicenter. Azadshahr, Damghan, Bandar-e Torkaman, and Gonbad-e Kavus may have also experienced weak shaking from the earthquake.

Earlier, a 5.1 magnitude quake hit northern Iran's Semnan area, triggering speculations about nuclear testing due to its proximity to military facilities. The quake struck 27 kilometers southwest of Semnan at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
