Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez has secured overwhelming support from his colleagues in the House of Representatives for his reelection as Speaker of the House, according to House leaders. House Assistant Majority Leaders Ernesto Dionesio and Zia Adiong made the announcement during the orientation of new lawmakers in the 20th Congress. Dionesio stated that at least 283 members have signed a manifesto in support of Romualdez, indicating a strong backing for his leadership. When asked if there are other strong contenders for the Speakership, Dionesio mentioned it seems unlikely.
House Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco, who did not sign the manifesto, was expelled from the National Unity Party (NUP) which supports Romualdez. Frasco had expressed support for other potential Speakers. Adiong emphasized that members are free to choose their candidates but highlighted the stability and efficiency of Romualdez's leadership.
Adiong and Dionesio clarified that Romualdez did not discuss the Speakership race during a meeting with new House members. They also mentioned that Romualdez did not seek support from the new members regarding the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Romualdez, a cousin of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., is expected to be reelected as Speaker of the House.
