Education Minister Jason Clare wants the government to have the power to strip funding from childcare centres not meeting safety standards. Safety regulations in childcare have been in focus after a childcare worker in Victoria faced over 70 charges, including sexual offences.
Clare mentioned being informed about the allegations last week and discussed safety standards with education ministers nationwide. He emphasized the importance of removing personal phones from childcare centers, a recommendation by the National Safety Regulator.
Clare stated, \"We've made it clear now in the law that personal phones or personal devices cannot be used in these centres.\" He also expressed the need to cut funding to centers not meeting safety standards, highlighting the government's power in this aspect.
He mentioned, \"I've asked my department to draft the legislation as quickly as possible.\" The Victorian Government has set up a webpage with information for affected families at www.vic.gov.au/childcare-centres-investigation.
