The rumoured remake was first mentioned in the 2021 Nvidia leak, which accurately predicted other Square Enix game releases. Fans speculate that a new vinyl release titled Timeless Tales might be related to the remake. Final Fantasy 14's latest expansion also references Final Fantasy 9, but the director has denied any remake plans.
