72 people sick from salmonella in salami outbreak: PHAC

Officials report that 72 individuals, primarily in Alberta, have become sick after consuming salami that was recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. The Public Health Agency of Canada provided an updated notice regarding an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet, Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot, and Bona brand Mild Genova Salami. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall for these products in Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba on June 10.

Among those affected, 57 cases were in Alberta, 14 in Ontario, and one in Manitoba. Since the recall, seven individuals have been hospitalized. The majority of cases occurred between mid-April and mid-June, with individuals falling ill after consuming salami in sandwiches or from deli counters.

The federal health agency advises checking for specific product codes: 5035 226, 5049 226, 5020 228, 5035 228, and 5035 226. Salmonella is a food-borne bacterial infection that can manifest days or weeks after exposure, even in the absence of symptoms. It can lead to severe and potentially fatal infections, especially in vulnerable populations.

Common symptoms in healthy individuals include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.
