Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Urges Countries to Strengthen Multilateralism Amid Weakening Global Rules

Countries should respond to weakening global norms by promoting integration, breaking down barriers and strengthening multilateralism, said Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. He emphasized the need to update global trade rules and improve the multilateral system through persistent effort. Wong stressed the importance of collective efforts to address common threats like pandemics, climate change, and financial shocks. He cited the need for a more resilient and inclusive multilateralism tailored to current realities, using the example of WTO rules lagging behind digital trade advancements. Singapore's collaboration with Australia and Japan on digital trade rules exemplifies the potential for updating global institutions, according to Wong.
