Israel-Hamas Conflict: Will Gaza Violence Continue? Peace Talks Hindered by Israeli Withdrawal Dispute

Talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza are stalling over the extent of Israeli forces' withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave, according to Palestinian and Israeli sources familiar with the negotiations in Doha.

The indirect talks over a U.S. proposal for a 60-day ceasefire are expected to continue, despite the latest obstacles in clinching a deal. Hamas has rejected the withdrawal maps proposed by Israel, as they would leave around 40% of the territory under Israeli control.

Hamas wants Israel to retreat to previous ceasefire lines before renewing its offensive in March. Matters regarding aid, guarantees for ending the war, and U.S. intervention are also presenting challenges in the negotiations.

Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff will join discussions in Doha this week. Delegations from Israel and Hamas are in Qatar for talks on a phased release of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawals, and ending the war. Hamas demands an end to the war before freeing remaining hostages, while Israel links the end of fighting to the release of all hostages and dismantling of Hamas.

The war began on October 7, 2023, with Hamas-led militants storming into Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages taken into Gaza.
