Irish households struggle as food prices soar, Dáil debate reveals

Households are facing high food prices, according to Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald. A PWC report revealed that 70% of Irish consumers are concerned about food costs. Data from the CSO shows significant price hikes, such as a 54% increase in sugar, a 48% rise in lamb prices, and a 55% jump in the cost of cod fillets. McDonald stated that families are spending €3000 more annually on groceries compared to 2021.

Minister of State Neale Richmond called supermarket chains to address the issue. McDonald questioned the Taoiseach about introducing a cost of living package in the Budget. The Taoiseach attributed high food prices to post-Covid and Ukraine war inflation but noted that the inflation rate is now below the EU target of 2%. The upcoming Budget will focus on child poverty, housing, and an expected wage growth of 3-3.5%.

Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan raised concerns about rising food costs, alleging families are overpaying by €3000 annually. He called for transparency in supermarket profits and urged the Government to mandate profit disclosures. The Taoiseach defended Government interventions to alleviate the cost of living.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik criticized the government for tolerating high child homelessness rates. She called for an eviction ban and support for legislation prioritizing children's welfare. The Taoiseach highlighted increased social housing construction and efforts to reduce time spent in emergency accommodation.
