Station Worker's Amazing Recovery from Rare Mosquito-Borne Virus

A young station worker, Isaac Pearce, who contracted the rare mosquito-borne virus Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) while working in outback Queensland is making a remarkable recovery after a four-month battle for survival.

Isaac spent 126 days in intensive care after becoming infected near Normanton in the Gulf of Carpentaria earlier this year. He walked out of Townsville University Hospital ICU last week and will continue his rehabilitation at Rockhampton Hospital.

Isaac Pearce is one of three people in Queensland infected with MVE in the past five years, according to Queensland health figures.

Isaac's mother, Mel Jones, mentioned that he had to learn to walk again as the virus affected his stomach, swallowing, and heart. He was found unconscious after complaining of a headache while working at a cattle station and was flown to Townsville Hospital on February 14, placed on life support.

Isaac Pearce expressed gratitude to the medical staff for their care during his recovery. Townsville Hospital and Health Service ICU clinical director Siva Senthuran described his progress as remarkable.

Infectious diseases physician Professor Paul Griffin highlighted the rarity of MVE in Australia and the potential severity of mosquito-borne diseases. He emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures against mosquito bites.

While Mr Pearce still has a long road ahead for full recovery, his progress has been faster than expected. He looks forward to continuing his rehabilitation closer to home at Rockhampton Hospital.
