Sheffield University Expands Neuroscience Center to Boost Research

Work has begun on a £24m project to expand the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) at the University of Sheffield. The project aims to double the research capacity of the facility, focusing on neurological diseases like Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, and Motor Neurone Disease. Director Dame Prof Pamela Shaw expressed optimism about the upgrade, emphasizing the goal of finding curative therapies for these diseases.

The expansion will be adjacent to the current facility, with the aim of accommodating the growing research team, which has increased from 64 to over 300 since SITraN was established in 2010. The project received support from organizations like The Ian Pratt MND Foundation and the Mel Evans Foundation, as well as families affected by neurodegenerative diseases.

Gemma's father, Nigel, highlighted the importance of research in finding a cure for MND, emphasizing the impact it has on families. Fundraising efforts, including a charity walk that raised over £100,000, have contributed to the project's progress.
