Philippine Defense Chief Pushes for AWACS Capability in New Fighter Jets
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasizes the need for the Philippine Air Force's new multi-role fighters to be equipped with Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) capability. This move is part of the Air Force's plan to enhance its Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) and address evolving security challenges in the region.
The multi-role fighters (MRFs) to be procured by the Department of National Defense (DND) for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) should have Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) capability, according to Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. The PAF, celebrating its 78th founding anniversary, is actively pursuing its MRF procurement plan to complete its Integrated Air Defense System (IADS).
Teodoro emphasized the need for AWACS capability to make the MRFs operational as a force package. AWACS is a mobile, long-range radar surveillance and control center that provides a comprehensive view of the airspace, enabling detection, tracking, and management of air and maritime traffic.
In addition to AWACS, the DND is also considering acquiring aerial tankers for mid-air refueling to support the MRFs during long flight operations. Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura, PAF commanding general, highlighted the Air Force's advancements in surveillance, precision strike, integrated air defense, and space operations to address evolving security challenges in the region.
Teodoro mentioned budget constraints and the coordination with the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to ensure continuous funding for the MRF program. The DND allocated P61 billion for the PAF’s MRF acquisition project to avoid buying equipment that cannot be optimally utilized.
Teodoro stressed the importance of having the finance department and the legislature agree on annual spending for the sustainment of these platforms. The DND is also considering the procurement of support equipment and munitions per aircraft to ensure operational readiness.
