DENR Aims to Protect 160-Hectare Seagrass Bed in Capiz
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is planning to safeguard a 160-hectare seagrass bed located in Tucad Reef near Pilar town in Capiz province. The seagrass bed, known locally as 'lusay,' plays a crucial role in supporting the local economy by aiding the fisheries sector and protecting coastlines. Threats such as pollution and unregulated coastal activities have led to a decline in this important habitat. Efforts are underway to designate it as a protected area to ensure its preservation.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is planning to protect a 160-hectare seagrass bed located in Tucad Reef off the coast of Pilar town in Capiz province. DENR-Capiz Provincial Director Dr. Ernest Federiso emphasized the importance of declaring the area a protected zone to safeguard one of the country's largest seagrass beds. Locally known as \"lusay,\" the seagrass in Pilar plays a crucial role in the local economy by supporting fisheries and protecting coastlines. However, the habitat has been facing threats from pollution, sedimentation, and unregulated coastal activities. A recent dive was conducted to assess Tucad Reef for possible inclusion in the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS). DENR-Capiz is collaborating with the local government, Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and other stakeholders to conserve the seagrass bed discovered in 2021.
