Criticism Over Lack of Road Signs for Mayo Event This Weekend
Local councillors express frustration as Mayo County Council does not permit signage for an upcoming athletics event, the Telus International Salmon Run Triathlon, on June 28. Organizers unable to use electronic advance warning signs, sparking debate over consistency in sign regulations.

A local councillor criticized Mayo County Council for not allowing signage to be erected for an athletics event this weekend. Cllr Jarlath Munnelly expressed disappointment that electronic advance warning signs were not permitted for the Telus International Salmon Run Triathlon on Saturday, June 28. He questioned why effective signs couldn't be used, citing inconsistency in treatment of such events.
Cllr John O’Hara echoed Cllr Munnelly’s concerns, emphasizing the importance of signage for event organization. Senior executive engineer Orla Bourke explained that electronic signage rules are specific and aimed at preventing an overabundance of signs. While electronic signs can notify of road delays due to events, they are not allowed to advertise events.
The Telus International Salmon Run Triathlon is set to attract a large crowd this weekend, featuring athletes swimming in the River Moy, cycling through Belleek Woods, and finishing with a 5km run to the Quay and back.
