Beau's 5K Raises Over $50,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research

The annual Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer run took place on Saturday, June 21 in Vankleek Hill. This year’s run raised over $50,000, as reported by Maddy Graves of Ovarian Cancer Canada. The event was initiated in 2015 by friends and family of Ashley Courtois (Cowan) from Vankleek Hill, who battled ovarian cancer until 2018.

Before the run, 300 participants had signed up, but on the day of the event, more than 350 individuals joined in. Graves highlighted the unique nature of the Beau’s 5K, stating that there is no other fundraiser like it in Canada, offering a distinct vibe and atmosphere.

Graves also shared some alarming statistics - 3,000 Canadian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually, and half of them do not survive beyond five years. She emphasized that ovarian cancer is the most lethal women’s cancer, with no effective screening test available. Most diagnoses occur at advanced stages, underscoring the critical need for research funding to develop a screening test.
