Banff Rock Slide Survivor Recalls Friend's Heroic Act: 'I'm Still in Shock'

A survivor of a rock slide in Banff National Park is remembering his roommate, Hamza Benhilal, who died in the incident. Khaled Elgamal, the survivor, described Benhilal as a kind friend. The rock slide occurred at Bow Glacier Falls, resulting in two fatalities.

Elgamal, recovering from injuries in a Calgary hospital, expressed shock and grief over the loss of his friend. The two had met in an online program and later became housemates in British Columbia. They were on vacation in Banff when the tragedy struck.

During the hike, they heard a loud noise and witnessed the rock slide. Benhilal's quick warning saved Elgamal's life. Despite sustaining injuries, Elgamal managed to make his way down the mountain and receive help from other hikers.

Benhilal's body was recovered from the rubble, along with another victim, Jutta Hinrichs. Parks Canada stated that the slide was unpredictable and a natural geological event. The area remains closed as investigations continue.

Elgamal, awaiting discharge from the hospital, is deeply saddened by the loss of his friend. Support from fellow hikers has provided some comfort during this difficult time.
